Jack Beckman is back in the Funny Car points lead, but he has some hot pursuers from his own Don Schumacher Racing camp and from Kalitta Motorsports’ JR Todd, the racer he defeated in the U.S. Nationals final round.
And Todd has extra motivation to spoil Beckman’s bid for a second championship after walking away from last week’s U.S. Nationals not exactly happy for his rival.
Todd, who was seeking is third NHRA U.S. Nationals victory in four years, was upset with Beckman’s staging procedure last Sunday. Beckman rolled in deep and lit both staging bulbs on the Christmas Tree—a move called “double-bulbing,” which gave Todd almost no time to get set to launch. Nevertheless, Todd got the jump on Beckman but lost by .0371 of a second, and at the top end, Todd was prepared to jump Beckman physically.
