Kari Holland says cancelled events like Cruise Weekend mean more young drivers are taking to the streets with their souped-up cars.
Holland, who is secretary of the Saskatchewan Drag Racing Association, said big official events like the Draggins Annual Car show allow drivers to network and help older car lovers get to know younger racers.
COVID-19 put an end to all that.
“There are no programs. There’s no direction,” said Holland.
“Everyone is bored and is out there doing random things.”
Holland said many young drivers are spilling out onto the street and parking lots, where it can get dangerous.
“It gets out of control,” she said.
“Loud engines revving, burnouts, people are drifting around in the parking lots and other people are standing around. It’s very dangerous.”
According to police, racing tickets have tripled over the last year.
