It did not take very long for the motorsport bug to reach India. There has been speculation that the first competitive event in the realm of the automotive in India may have been in 1903, in Pune, though details are sketchy. Even if the very first automobile may have arrived elsewhere, it was the city of Calcutta which rapidly embraced the new-fangled toy for the rich, so much so that the first automotive association in India—the Automobile Association of Bengal—set the ball rolling for all the other automobile associations to follow. The Automobile Association of Bengal (AAB) also nudged the ball rolling for the very first bit of competitive activity early in the history of the automobile in India.
